5 Great Initiatives If You Are New In Sweden

One thing that excites me is how many new initiatives that have popped up in Sweden where newcomers can meet locals or find a job. In this post, I want to share five of them.

Just Arrived

This organization match newcomers with simple jobs. So everything from cleaning jobs to assistant jobs at offices. The road for you as a job hunter is easy. You register in the app and then whenever you are applying for a job, you get a short interview. Then Just Arrived gives suggestions to the company who they should meet. The organization is working very hard on making this service become bigger. It seems like 2017 will be their year of substantial growth.

I often advise people to take an easy job from the start if they struggle to find a job that they are aiming for in the long run. Why do I do this?

Because any job will give you benefits that you can bring with you. Having an “easy job” will help you with language for instance. I have met people with professional degrees that say they wished they had worked in a supermarket because their friends that did this had great Swedish. Sometimes, it can be better to do a job like that and learn the language than finding another job where you might not use the language as much.

Welcome App

The welcome app is a very great way to connect to locals. In the Welcome app, you can chat with people from Sweden. Personally, I really like the application and I have myself used it to meet new people. It is such an easy way for anyone to just meet some new people during the day. They have changed the design lately. Now, you can ask questions in the app and will get answers from people that wants to answer that particular type of question.

Yrkesdörren

The process is simple. You register yourself at their site. Then you will be matched with a local person that have the same professional interests as you do. The result will be a one-time meeting where you talk about your careers and get to know each other. This is very informal and a great way to get to know people in the same industry.

Jobbsprånget

This is an initiative for internships. In this site, you upload your CV and then employers can find you and book a meeting with you. Then if there is a match, you get an interview at the company. This will result in an internship.

Invitationsdepartementet

This organization was started by a person that was a teacher at SFI. She saw that people in her classes didn’t have that anyone to speak Swedish with. So, she started Invitationsdepartementet. What they do is match newcomers and locals over a dinner. So, when you register there you will get an invitation to a dinner with a Swede. Personally, I think that food is a very good way to connect to other people.

Have you tried these initiatives? If so, what do you think?
